Best of DCAS winners crowned

21 May 2018

On 27 April 2018, Team Determine with their play “Honestly, Ek verstaan jou nie” was named as the best production in the Best of DCAS drama Finale for 2017/18.

The initial talent search of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and various drama showcases in the Cape Winelands and Eden districts were followed by a higher level of exposure at the Baxter’s Zabalaza Festival and the KKNK.  Aspiring artists from Riversdale, Mbekweni, Zwelethemba, George, Franschhoek and Dysselsdorp had the opportunity to compete at the 2018 Suidoosterfees in Cape Town.

As the overall winner, Team Determine from George received their own production slot for 29 April and performed their grand finale in the professional environment of the Artscape Arena. The next highlight will be the showcase of the unique talents of Stephren Saayman from Riversdale and Brutney Singrew from George later this year in an episode of Suidooster, the DSTV soapie.

DCAS Deputy Director Liezl Jansen, accompanied by ATKV Heritage Manager Benjamin Bock and renowned film and theatre actor Sherman Pharo, adjudicated and acknowledged the hard work of the talented participants by handing over awards and certificates after the competition at Artscape.

The Suidoosterfees went above and beyond its support this year by presenting the Eden and Cape Winelands festival winners with their own showcase platform worth R10 000 thanks to the “Jong Sterre” initiative.

DCAS, with the support of our partners, aims to grow our next generation of theatre stars through festivals – BETTER TOGETHER.
