Accredited Training for Emerging Building Contractors in the Western Cape

3 July 2015

The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works will soon be providing accredited training to 60 emerging contractor-owners from across the province on how to run their construction businesses more effectively.

Course participants will spend five days a month over ten months, starting on 13 July 2015 in Cape Town.

The part-time design of the course enables participants to spend one week a month in training, and allowing them three weeks to actively manage their businesses. Those who successfully complete the training will receive a certificate of competence from the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA).

The course constitutes the foundation phase of the Department’s Siyenyuka Contractor Development Programme and it supports the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). The programme is open to contractors who have a Level 2 Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) rating, and preference is given to CIDB-rated contractors who have registered construction businesses and who have been active in the industry for at least two years.

The training components are:

  1. Enterprise development.
  2. Building the construction business.
  3. Applying innovative safety principles to the construction site.
  4. Managing the construction site.

The duration of the programme was six months when launched in 2012. The Department responded to participant feedback about how the course could be improved by adding more modules, and extending its duration to ten months.

The progress of participants will be assessed through monthly written tests, and at the end of the course, on the quality of the portfolio of evidence they have compiled.

By offering training accredited by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), the Department is helping to open doors for many owners of small construction businesses, both women and men. It is proud of taking effective action to facilitate skills development and promote the businesses of emerging building contractors in the province.
