“Mal Oor Dans” Competition Inspires Local Dancers

4 July 2013

The exciting “Mal Oor Dans” competition was hosted by The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and City of Cape Town (CoCT) during the month of June to give Western Cape learners the opportunity to showcase their dancing and musical talents.

The competition, themed Be Smart, Don’t Start! forms an integral part of the programmes offered by the DCAS Mass Participation, Opportunity and Access, Development and Growth (MOD) Centres and the CoCT Cultural, Sport and Recreational Facilities in the province.

DCAS and CoCT presented dance-off events in Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Ravensmead, Atlantis and Ocean View. Various forms of dance, as well as rap and hip hop music, were used to raise awareness around social issues.

Ms Tracey-Lee Thomas of DCAS Sport Development says that the idea of the events is to encourage learners to visit their local MOD Centres. “Through the 'Mal Oor Dans' competition, we illustrated what learners could achieve through joining the MOD programme. It keeps learners occupied in a positive way and provides them with the opportunity to express themselves and improve their talents. It can open new career opportunities for them,” she said.

Earlier this year, the initiative was promoted through visits to schools and shopping malls. Ms Thomas added that the events were very successful and she hopes more learners join the initiative in future. The competition is expected to be rolled out across the province as a build-up to a major dance-off event.
