“Mal Oor Dans” Competition

22 March 2013

On 22 March 2013, as part of the weeks’ Human Rights Day activities, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in partnership with the City of Cape Town will be hosting a dance competition at the Athlone Civic Centre. This initiative forms part of the MOD Programme as implemented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

The competition’s name will be “Die MOD kompetisie”, with MOD in this case meaning “Mal Oor Dans”. The theme for the day is: “Be smart, don’t start!”

The aim of the competition is to promote a healthy lifestyle by staying clear of alcohol and drug abuse and to rather invest your energy in enhancing your talents.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has Mass participation, Opportunity and access, Development and Growth (MOD) Centres at various schools across the Western Cape where coaches teach children to dance, act, sing and be exposed to sport coaching and specifically skills development, after school hours.

The event will be used to promote access to, and opportunities through, these MOD Centres. Learners will showcase their talents in front of a large audience at a competitive level.

The targeted audience is learners at primary schools in Grades 6 and 7, as well as learners attending high schools.
