Palliative Care

21 October 2025

Palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life for people living with serious or life-threatening illnesses. It also provides vital support to families and caregivers looking after loved ones.

Quality of life means feeling as comfortable, supported, and cared for as possible. This looks different for each person. Palliative care helps manage pain, symptoms, and emotional needs, while also supporting social and spiritual wellbeing.

Palliative care vs hospice care

  • Palliative care: Can begin at any stage of illness. It focuses on relief from pain and symptoms, while also addressing emotional and social needs.
  • Hospice care: Usually starts when a patient is in the advanced stage of illness. Care is often provided by community-based organisations contracted by the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness.

Who can receive palliative care?

You may benefit from palliative care if you have a chronic illness or disability and experience:

  • Ongoing symptoms despite treatment
  • Difficulty with daily activities
  • An increased need for care or support
  • Significant weight loss or decline in health

Palliative care is available for all ages and can be provided at home, in hospitals, hospices, or specialised facilities, depending on the patient’s needs.

The patient will be assessed or referred for palliative care by their healthcare worker at the clinic or hospital where they access care. You can also ask a healthcare worker about palliative care options available to you or your loved one.

What support is offered?

  • Pain and symptom management
  • Emotional, social, and spiritual support for patients and families
  • Bereavement assistance for families after the loss of a loved one
  • Practical support, including free equipment loans (such as wheelchairs) through local clinics, where available
