Mental Health
Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Our primary healthcare clinics across the Western Cape offer support mental health support for all age groups, including:
- Assessment and diagnosis
- Treatment and medication
- Counselling and support
- Referrals to specialised services when needed
Each clinic has a team that may include mental health nurses, social workers, psychiatry staff, and social auxiliary workers. In rural areas, some specialists may visit on a rotating schedule.
Access mental health services at your nearest clinic
Mental health services are offered at all primary healthcare clinics. Depending on capacity, these services may be offered on specific days and times depending on the clinic. It’s best to call your clinic to book an appointment on the days these services are available. Some clinics also run outreach or satellite services to help people in hard-to-reach areas.
What to expect
At your first visit, you will:
- Be assessed by a mental health professional
- Be guided through treatment options, including medication, counselling, or both
- Be referred to specialised care if needed
What to bring to your first appointment:
- Your ID book, ID card or passport
- You will be asked to complete a form and open a patient folder
- If referred to a hospital, bring your referral letter and proof of income (if you have) to the hospital when you go for your appointment.
