Dreaming of a Professional Acting Future
Dreams of performing on a professional stage may become a reality for two groups of actors at the final showdown of the Eden Drama Festival in Heidelberg on Saturday, 24 November 2012.
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) will partner with the Hessequa Municipality and professional judges to select the productions that may be hosted at the Baxter Theatre Zabalaza Festival and Die Burger Suidoosterfees in 2013. In the run-up to the Heidelberg finale, participants received theoretical and practical training, as well as advice on how to make their productions more professional.
After months of rehearsing, the groups from George High School, Joey Monroe Productions, Redlight 7, Murray High School, Inferno Fusion Drama Group and Little Legends Drama Group will present their productions.
The Eden Drama Festival has been instrumental in the lives of a number of aspiring actors since it started last year. Twelve productions have already been developed in the district, and various actors have since been exposed to the three major Western Cape drama festivals – the Zabalaza Festival, Die Burger Suidoosterfees and the Absa Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK). Two young people chosen from the winners of the Eden Drama Festival were invited to audition for Danie Odendaal Productions, and made an appearance in the popular soapie 7de Laan in May 2012.
This initiative provides potentially life-changing opportunities for aspiring performers. Through its involvement in the Eden Drama Festival, DCAS is committed to promoting and developing local community-based drama in the region.
