International Disabilty Day Celebrated

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in partnership with the Department of the Premier is organizing a major sporting event for the Disabled sector to celebrate the International Day for Disabled. Activities kick-off today, Friday, December 02 with disabled athletes cycling from Tyger Valley in Cape Town to Vredenberg in the West Coast.

Approximately 46 blind cyclists on tandems, the blind and other disabled athletes will take part in this race carrying a torch.

The main event will take place on Saturday, 3 December 2005 at Vredenberg Sport Grounds in the West Coast where people of this region will be afforded the privilege of being part of this important event.

Expected to attend the event is Ernest van Dyk, a disabled marathon champion who won championship titles in Boston and New York. About one thousand five hundred disabled athletes from special schools and institutions of the Western Cape will enjoy themselves in various sport codes organized for the day.
