Overberg sports federations receive financial backing from DCAS

10 April 2019

Sports federations in the Overberg received a financial boost on Tuesday when the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) handed over almost R900 000 in funding at a ceremony at the Glaskasteel Sports Complex in Bredasdorp.

A total of R9 million has been allocated to sports federations around the Western Cape (including the Overberg) and R1 million of this has been earmarked specifically for local athletes who will be competing internationally.

Anroux Marais, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, said a total of over R210 million will be spent on ”proactive plans to increase mass participation, skills development and talent identification in the province“.

”This allocation will undoubtedly promote sport participation which in turn  will  contribute towards reconciliation and development of the Western Cape through the provision of equitable, accessible and affordable sport facilities, programmes and services,” Minister Marais said.

”Our Department is committed to creating the opportunities needed to offer an alternate healthy lifestyle. By supporting sport development at grassroots level, we aim to advance unity, hope, reconciliation, respect, pride, diversity and a sense of belonging - all of which are much needed in the current national climate. While creating these essential necessities and favourable conditions, we then also increase opportunities for jobs and the holistic development needed so that our people can live lives that they value,” she added.

Of the R890 000 allocated to the Overberg federations, R34 000 will be used to cover everyday running costs while R540 000 has been issued specifically for the hosting of major events in the region.

This forms part of a total of R5.2 million that has been earmarked specifically for events hosted by sports federations around the province. Minister Marais said this would play an integral role in “establishing the Western Cape as the preferred events destination in South Africa and globally”.

DCAS works to promote the development of sportsmen and sportswomen around the Western Cape. BETTER TOGETHER.
