Mzanzi Golden Economy Roadshow Highlights Need For Funding Of The Arts In WC

11 May 2016

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in collaboration with the National Department of Arts and Culture and the National Lotteries Commission hosted a Mzanzi Golden Economy Roadshow on Tuesday, 10 May 2016 at the Opera House Bar, Artscape Theatre. This event formed part of the Africa Month celebrations in the province.

The Roadshow focused primarily on the promotion of funding and discussions that were presented related to the Mzansi Golden Economy Open Call Process, the Community Arts Centres Programme, the Artists in Schools Programme and the National Arts Council’s Funds.

Director of Arts and Culture at DCAS, Jane Moleleki, opened the event and then various topics were discussed during the workshop. This included funding available in arts and culture, and information with regards to arts and culture funding in a broader stakeholder base. Various documents were also circulated during the workshop in order to assist those who attended.

Several challenges and proposals were identified by the participants to ensure future engagements will roll out smoothly. Some of these highlights and suggestions included the strengthening of partnerships and the regular consultation with stakeholders; focusing on a twinning programme where matured/established organisations can mentor younger organisations; the need to take the roadshows to districts and community levels and the realisation that the application process can be challenging, and there are those who need assistance to complete the applications.

Let us continue to support funding for the arts and encourage artists to grow in excellence BETTER TOGETHER.
