Gymnasts from across the country wowed the crowd at the opening ceremony of the SA Gym Games at the Bellville Velodrome on 7 October 2014. The South African Gym Games is hosted by the South African Gymnastics Federation of South Africa (SAGF) and supported by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and the City of Cape Town (CoCT).

The games are host to 2,500 gymnasts from all nine provinces of South Africa and will take place from 06 – 12 October 2014 at the Bellville Velodrome and the Good Hope Centre. The week-long Games will see six gymnastic disciplines partake, namely Artistic Men, Artistic Women, Trampoline & Tumbling, Acrobatic Gymnastics, Rope Skipping and Rhythmic Gymnastics.

In his address at the opening ceremony, Chief Director for Sport and Recreation at DCAS Advocate Lyndon Bouah welcomed all the participants to the Western Cape. “The vision of the Western Cape Government is to create a socially inclusive, creative and active Western Cape and all of you athletes are already living it” said Adv. Bouah who encouraged the athletes to enjoy the games.

The games will host some top gymnastic stars who have participated in the Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympic games and World Championships, such as Grace Legote, Aimee van Rooyen, Shannon Gardiner, Bianca Zoonekynd and Offering Tlaka. The President of SAGF, Jerry Masia, commended DCAS for their involvement in gymnastics in the Western Cape.

DCAS will continue to support gymnastics in the Western Cape. We encourage all gymnasts to use the opportunities to participate. Let’s continue to create an active, healthy Western Cape BETTER TOGETHER.
