Gym upgrade launched in Gansbaai

18 July 2014
The Gansbaai Communal Sport Centre was abuzz with activity on Wednesday, 16 July 2014 when Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Nomafrench Mbombo and Cllr Nicolette Botha Guthrie of the Overstrand Municipality launched an upgrade to the gym facility.

The Overstrand Municipality, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), Grootbos Foundation and Absa and various other funders joined hands in 2006 to develop the facilities at the centre. In addition to the upgraded gym, the facility now boasts infrastructure for soccer, rugby, netball, hockey, cricket and tennis. This provides over 20 000 athletes from surrounding areas with opportunities to excel in their chosen sport.

Dr Mbombo said the facility plays a big role in developing young talent in Gansbaai. “We promote sport to achieve social cohesion and to promote excellence in sport”.

The upgrade comprised a roof replacement, a stoep/patio extension as well as an additional storage container. The Gansbaai Communal Sports Centre is managed under the Absa Spaces for Sports programme.

DCAS contributes to improving community sporting facilities to give people an opportunity to engage in sport and develop their sporting talent.
