The Afikaanse Taalmuseum en –monument (ATM) in Paarl will present a free panel discussion on the creation of new words and expressions, word play and metaphors on Saturday, 24 May 2014. The programme, which forms part of International Museum Day celebrations, will be held from 10:00 to 12:00. Entry is free.
Presenters will discuss various topics on the day. Dr Willem Botha, chief editor of the Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (WAT), will discuss innovations, the new words included in the WAT and how members of the public can get involved in the WAT “Adopt a Word” project. Catherine Snel, Manager of Heritage and Education at the ATM, will present examples of colourful words and phrases that the ATM recorded between 2006 and 2007 in Kamiesberg region, Northern Cape. Local rapper Simon Witbooi, also known as Hemel Besem, will discuss how “rymkletsers” use new words, idioms and metaphors to keep Afrikaans exciting.
