R2m for Metropole Sport Federations

16 April 2014

On 15 April 2014, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer handed over a cheque in the amount of R2 030 000 to 47 sport federations affiliated to the Western Province Sports Council. This was the fourth funding ceremony hosted in various regions of the Western Cape this month.

Equipment was handed over at the event to Western Province Chess and WP Kickboxing by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) Club Development Programme.

Dr Meyer said the funding was approved because it is clear that the region has a good, solid administration that is working effectively towards transformation, development and capacity building in sport. “Sport in the Metropole region is having a big impact on the Western Cape economy; it reduces crime and gives people hope.” He encouraged sport federations to “stretch” funds and to actively promote sport tourism in the region this year.

JP Naude, Chairperson of the Western Province Sports Council, told sport federations that the funds must be utilised effectively to “to facilitate transformation and sport development, to improve administration, and to support the hosting of major events”. He encouraged sport federations to seek sponsors through exposure on the newly launched WP Sports Council TV, broadcast every Friday from 21:00 to 22:00 on DSTV channel 263.

The R2m 2014/15 DCAS grant for the Metropole region is earmarked for the following purposes: R1.445m for development (47 federations), R585 000 for major events (25 federations, 43 events) and R225 000 for sport tourism (five events).
