Minister Madikizela To Handover 34 Hostels in Bergrivier Municipality

27 July 2016

On Thursday, 28 July 2016 Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela will officially hand-over 34 hostels at St. Helena Street, Veldrift in the Bergrivier Municipality.

The 34 hostels at Laaiplek consist of   29 refurbished units, 1 reconstructed unit and 4 new units and this project was initiated under the Integrated Residential Development Programme (IRDP).

The hostels were previously in the ownership of the fish factory Marine Fisheries and were transferred to the Bergrivier Municipality many years ago.  They were inhabited by the employees of Marine Fisheries at that time. There was no lease agreement between the Bergrivier Municipality and the residents at that stage and the residents changed over the years.

Households that earn less than R3500 pm and qualify for a housing subsidy will be given ownership of their units. Those who do not qualify for subsidies will be given the opportunity to lease the refurbished units from the municipality.

All media are invited.
