“These winners have done us proud through contributing to excellent service delivery in the Western Cape” said Minister Madikizela. “I had no doubt that each and every entry for the national prizes were capable of winning, yet that was up to the judges to decide and we agree with their decisions. Everyone who took part tonight was already a winner at the provincial level, and they can walk away with their heads held high. I hope they all continue to do an excellent job for the province in the future”

The Govan Mbeki awards are an annual feature in the Human Settlements diary and are to honour those who have performed best in the Human Settlements sector. The awards also aim to promote excellence, best practices and instil  healthy competition among all Departments of Human Settlements in Provinces and Municipalities. They are also a way of encouraging and thanking all the Human Settlements stakeholders who are making a valuable contribution to help the government realize the goal of providing decent housing, tenure of security and comfortable living to all South African people. The awards were handed out by the National Minister of Human Settlements, Mrs Lindiwe Sisulu and the Deputy National Minister Zoe Kota Fredericks along with other dignitaries.

The Western Cape Department of Human Settlements has been delivering excellent performance, exceeding its service delivery target of 17 583 housing opportunities in the 2014/2015 financial year with a delivery of 18 817 housing opportunities and also achieving a clean audit from the Auditor General for the said financial year.

The outstanding performance in both service delivery numbers and financial accountability was only possible through the contributions and efforts of municipalities, contractors, developers and other stakeholders in the human settlements delivery chain and the Department acknowledged this excellence  through the 2015 Provincial Govan Mbeki awards held at the Lagoon beach Hotel in Cape Town on the 23 April 2015.

The Department congratulates all the winners and participants on their achievements and contribution to service delivery in the province.
