Schools operating as per normal tomorrow

5 September 2019

The WCED has become aware of a post on doing the rounds on social media today regarding a “shutdown” of schools tomorrow, Friday 6 September 2019. (Attached image)

It states “Everything must shut down, Tools down. Roads closed. Schools closed.”

Please note that schools are NOT closed tomorrow and will be operating as per normal.

In fact, learners are currently writing exams. Our Grade 12 learners are also writing their matric trial examinations, which is extremely important in their preparation for the final National Senior Certificate examinations.

It is not yet clear whether there will be any impact at all, however, we remind parents, communities and teachers, that it is extremely dangerous to leave learners unattended, either in their homes, at their points of travel or even at their schools. All teachers are expected to report to work as per normal.

The WCED does sympathise with the message that communities are trying to portray. We are very aware of the effects of crime, especially on our children, and stand in support against violence and abuse. However, we must also protect our learners and ensure their safety, as well as the protection of teaching and learning time.

Learners and teachers can of course express their views but it should not disrupt school time.

I would therefore like to make it very clear that our schools are open tomorrow and that no permission has been given for any school  to close.

We will remain in contact with law enforcement authorities, should any management decisions be necessary during the course of the day.
