Media Alert: Velddrif Kick-boxing club to receive new equipment

9 June 2016

On 10 and 11 June 2016, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), in partnership with The Sports Trust, will hand over equipment to a kick-boxing club in Velddrif. This is part of the Western Cape Government’s ongoing programme to keep young people away from gangsterism.

The community of Velddrif has high levels of gang activity. The aim of the kick-boxing club is to encourage young people to engage in healthy competition, and to offer an alternative to gangsterism and crime. The sport also teaches them self-defence, and offers them an opportunity to compete at provincial and national level if they dedicate themselves to the training.

DCAS has formed a long-term partnership with The Sports Trust to continue to provide support to kick-boxing clubs across the Western Cape to ensure the sustainability of the clubs. This ensures that the clubs can offer adequate facilities for young people in communities to take part in the sport.

All media are invited to attend the event.
