Media Alert: Western Cape Sailors Welcomed by Minister Marais

18 August 2015

Today, 18 August 2015, the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, will welcome the five young sailors from the Western Cape who achieved a podium finish in 3rd place at the Qingdao International Sailing Week Regatta, held in China last week.

Minister Marais said that she is extremely proud of Sieraj Jacobs from Grassy Park; Paul Vivian from Sunset Beach; Nina Pienaar from Rosebank, Cape Town; Daniel Agulhas from Ocean View and Theo Yon from Hout Bay for holding the Western Cape in such high esteem at the 7th International Sailing Festival. “Despite the strong current, the flutter of breeze and wakes on the final day, Team Western Cape finished tops in third place. I am excited to welcome the team home to personally congratulate all five of them for representing the Western Cape at the International Festival”, she said.

Team Western Cape’s participation in the Qingdao International Sailing Week Regatta is a result of the international co-operation agreement between the Western Cape Government and the Chinese province of Shandong.  As part of the agreement, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with the South African Sailing Western Cape (SASWC) hosted a sailing team from the Qingdao Administration Centre of Sailing from 1 – 9 April 2015. The department also hosted the Vice Mayor of Qingdao to further discuss the Sport Agreement between Shandong & the Western Cape and to oversee the signing of 2 additional agreements:  the General Agreement on Sailing between the Qingdao Municipal Sports Bureau & SASWC and the Youth Sailing Exchange Agreement between the Qingdao Municipal Sports Bureau & SASWC. The next proposed sporting code to partner with will be Table Tennis.

Partnerships such as these are the epitome of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s mission to to encourage excellence and inclusiveness in sport and culture through the effective, efficient and sustainable use of our resources, and through creative partnerships with others. In moving to excellence, we will create the conditions for access and mass participation, talent identification and skills development.
