Community Safety to host Policing Needs and Priorities engagement in Metro East

25 January 2023

On 26 January 2023, the Department of Community Safety will host its Policing Needs and Priorities (PNP) engagement in the City of Cape Town for the SAPS Cape Metro East area.

The PNP engagement is critical to determine the Metro East area’s policing needs and priorities. This will culminate in a report that will be submitted to the National Minister of Police to take into account when resource allocation is done to the province as well as inform SAPS strategic and operational plans for the Metro East. It will also identify safety initiatives to be implemented by the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town.

Various stakeholders – such as the stakeholders from all spheres of Government, Community Police Forums (CPFs), the South African Police Service (SAPS), Neighbourhood Watches (NHWs), the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Police Ombudsman and the Head of Department for Community Safety, Adv. Yashina Pillay will form part of the Cape Metro East PNP engagement.

The Minister for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, who will also be in attendance stated: ‘I’m looking forward to engaging our stakeholders, as they play an important role in combatting crime across our areas. In order for us to be effective in our crime fighting efforts, we have to work as one, as criminals are cooperating to advance their criminal enterprise. We, as a collective have a responsibility to within the confines of the law, stop these illegal activities’ .

The engagements are intended to contribute significantly to the prevention and reduction of violent crime and murders, by providing for greater integration and collaboration between government, civil society and stakeholders.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews.
