Minister Plato and SAPS embark on a POCA safety outreach campaign

8 March 2016

Today, 8 March 2016, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, accompanied by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, will embark on an extensive safety outreach campaign aligned to the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA).

Note: All media are invited to attend.

Date: Tuesday, 8 March 2016
Time: 09:00 – 12:00
Venue: Meeting point: The Reading Room, Chestnut Place, Syringa Way, off Chestnut Way, Belhar

Minister Plato is expanding outreach engagements to focus on the combating and prevention of organised crime. This will include all those who benefit from gangsterism, drugs and illegal activities in our communities.

The campaign, which kicks off in Belhar tomorrow, will see Minister Plato visit different areas throughout March and April 2016 to engage on their safety concerns.

The Department of Community Safety and the SAPS will be joined by safety partners such as the Community Policing Forum (CPF), Neighbourhood Watch (NHW), church leaders and officials from Education and Social Development.

Our priority will be to gather information which can assist the police in ridding communities of criminal elements through enforcement of POCA.

The POCA makes provision for offences ranging from racketeering, gangsterism and unlawful activity – which can include drug, alcohol and firearm offences. The Act makes it possible to not only target those guilty of the offence but those who are protecting offenders.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility and, through a whole of society approach, we aim to ensure that concerns are effectively addressed and that credible information is provided to the SAPS for their investigations.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews.
