Education MEC to Visit Training Programmes

11 July 2004
Western Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore will visit two centres where training programmes on the Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS) for Grades 4 to 6, are taking place.

The visits will take place on Tuesday 13 July, times and venues as follows:

  • 08h00 - Nompumelelo Elsen School, Gugulethu
  • 12h45 - Mount Pleasant Primary School, Hermanus
  • About 7,700 primary school teachers and 1,900 school managers are attending training sessions at about 60 venues in the province during the school holidays. This is the biggest training session for the Education Department in one school holiday.

The theme for these workshops is "Making the RNCS your curriculum". The first sessions started on 1 July, and will run until 24 July 2004.

Key features of the RNCS include comprehensive outcomes and assessment standards that define what children must know and be able to do in each grade and learning area, and how their progress should be assessed.

The MEC will visit the centres to show his appreciation for the professionalism and commitment displayed by officials, teachers and school managers alike, who have sacrificed their schools holidays.

The training is voluntary and it demonstrates the level of commitment of teachers and officials, to building this province as a home for all.
