Western Cape Representative Council of Learners to Pay Tribute to Generation of 1976

13 June 2006
In an historical and key moment for youth development in the Western Cape, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will launch the Western Cape Representative Council of Learners (WCRCL), to be attended by about 1,800 high school learners from 700 schools across the province.

The launch, which will take place on Thursday 15 June, from 08h00 till 16h00 at His People's Church in N1 City, Goodwood, will form an important part of the WCED's commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising 30 years.

A long process of consultation with youth leaders in our schools will culminate in this event, having successfully concluded a first ever conference of high school learners last year in November when an interim committee was formed.

MEC Dugmore and the WCRCL Interim Committee have been driving this project as a major contribution to building social capital in education. The event will provide an excellent opportunity for the youth to display their leadership abilities as they plan to take ownership of the future as the leaders of tomorrow.

Highlights of the event will include cultural and music acts, as well as the presentation and adoption of the Constitution of the WCRCL. Various commissions at the event will debate themes that the new council will address in the year ahead.
