Premier Rasool and Education MEC Dugmore Host Press Conference on First Day of School

15 January 2008

Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool and Education MEC Cameron Dugmore will host a press conference to report back on the first day of school in the Western Cape. The press conference will take place during the Premier's visit to a new school in Khayelitsha.

On their visits to schools, each MEC is expected to have a short meeting with the principal and senior staff for not more 15 minutes and thereafter address a special assembly of learners (for not more than 30 minutes). A senior WCED official is to accompany each MEC.

NB: Premier Rasool will no longer be visiting Parkhurst Primary in Mitchell's Plain due to a funeral, but MEC Dugmore will visit the school as announced earlier.

The press conference details are as follows:

Time: 12.30 for 12.45
Date: Wednesday, 16 January 2008
Place: Manyano High School (Msobumvo Road, Ilitha Park, Khayelitsha)

NB: The press conference will take place during the Premier and MEC's visit to Manyano High School.

The Western Cape cabinet has been visiting schools across the province to welcome the 920,000 learners, including 80,000 grade 1s, back into school.

The Western Cape Cabinet has been checking on the state of readiness of the schools and either acknowledging and congratulating high schools that have performed well in the 2007 examinations or using the visits to encourage and motivate those that have not done so well.
