Deputy Mayor Kick Starts Soccer Tournament for Street Kids

Soccer fever is sweeping across Cape Town as several hundred street children from across the city gear up for the soccer tournament of their lives.

The Street Children's Soccer Tournament takes place this Saturday, 9 September 2006 at the Green Point Stadium Car Park.

About 32 teams of street children are expected to take part in the event which is jointly organised by the City of Cape Town, the Cape Town Partnership, and the fledgling Western Cape Street Children's Soccer League (WCSCSL).

For Saturday's big tournament, the Deputy Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Andrew Arnolds, will enter into the spirit of the game, by donning soccer boots and leading a team of City officials and councillors onto the field for the opening match.

Afterwards, Deputy Mayor Arnolds will hand over the official kit to be worn by the South African team at the Homeless World Cup Soccer Tournament which takes place later this month, from 22 to 30 September, at the Grand Parade.
