City Makes R3,6m Available to Improve Lives of Khayelitsha Residents

27 September 2006
Khayelitsha is to receive a R3,6 million boost from the City of Cape Town as part of its ward allocations for the current financial year.

Over 100 community organisations will benefit from the City's allocation of R2,4 million for capital projects and R1,2 million for operational projects in the three sub-councils in the area which consist of 12 wards.

The ward allocations for Sub-councils 9, 10 and 13, will be of particular benefit to vulnerable groups such as the aged, the youth, women's associations, sports groups, early childhood development and HIV/Aids workers.

With a population of over a million residents, Khayelitsha is grossly underdeveloped - with unemployment, poverty and homelessness being the order of the day.

The City's financial grants are aimed at changing the lives of residents at grassroots level and significantly contributing to the upliftment of communities.

One of the most significant initiatives is a R200 000 allocation for the construction of an early childhood facility for over 100 children in Kuyasa. (A full list of beneficiaries will be available at the function).

The grants will be handed over by Councillor Thozama Bevu, Chairperson of Sub-council 9, as well as representatives of Sub-councils 10 and 13, at the following community function:

Date: Friday, 29 September 2006
Time: 12:00
Venue: Lookout Hill, cnr Spine Road and Mew Way, Khayelitsha.

Photo Opportunity: Cheques will be handed over to beneficiaries.

All media are welcome to attend.
