Settlers High Scoops First Place at Tygerberg Olympiad for the Environment

Settlers High in Bellville has won this year's Tygerberg Olympiad for the Environment for the fourth year in a row.

Fourteen schools from across the city participated in the sixth annual Tygerberg Olympiad for the Environment which was held on Saturday, 5 August 2006 at the Tygerberg Nature reserve. The winner was announced at an Awards Ceremony held at the Kristo Pienaar Environmental Education centre in the reserve on Wednesday 20 September 2006.

The Settlers team was made up of learners Ross Franks, Leigh Johannes and Fanechka Esterhuysen. They each received R500. The supervising teacher was Mr Gerald Madeley.

DF Malan High took second place and Belhar High came third.

Special awards for Birding and Environmental Law both went to Sans Souci Girls High.

The Olympiad is presented in the form of an open book exam on Archaeology, Geology, Farming, Soils, History, Urban Development, Land Usage, Ecology and Environmental Law with a specific focus on the Tygerberg Region.

The participants visited a wine farm (Altydgedacht) and a game farm (Clara Anna Fontein) in the area. They also took to the veld equipped with scopes, binoculars and guide books to experience and identify our local birds under the skilled guidance of the Tygerberg Bird Club.
