Learners Celebrate Weedbuster Day at Macassar Dunes Nature Reserve

9 October 2006
The City of Cape Town and the Macassar Dune Co-Management Association, in partnership with Cape Flats Nature, are hosting a Weedbuster Day on Thursday, 12 October 2006, at the Macassar Dunes Nature Reserve.

This is an annual event where 240 primary school learners from schools in Khayelitsha and Macassar, particularly those schools closest to the Macassar Dunes, visit the dunes. They learn about alien invasive plants, water conservation and fynbos that grow on the dunes. For most learners it is their first visit to Macassar Dunes and a revelation that such a precious natural resource is sitting on their doorstep.

Date: Thursday, 12 October 2006
Time: 10:00 till 13:30
Venue: Macassar Dunes, Near Khayelitsha off Baden Powell Drive

This Weedbuster Day, which falls within National Weedbuster Week, is particularly important in the context of urban expansion coming closer to the Macassar Dunes. The City envisages a situation where the greatest ambassadors and caretakers of the Dunes are those people living closest to them. Environmental education is critical for these communities to develop a deep understanding of the benefits derived from this natural asset.

All media are invited to attend.
