Attempted Escape from Metro Police Ends Badly for Errant Motorist

16 September 2009
A motorist who was driving along the shoulder of the road on the N2 between Mew Way and the R300 has discovered the hard way that it is better to provide your particulars when stopped by a patrolling Metro Police officer than to attempt to evade the long arm of the law.

What made the original contravention all the more serious was that the motorist was driving along the shoulder of the road to jump the queue in peak hour traffic.

Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro, said that the officer pulled the vehicle off the road to issue fine.

"The motorist initially indicated that he wanted to get something from his car, jumped back into the driving seat and set off at high speed, weaving recklessly through the peak hour traffic," Faro said.

"The police officer radioed for assistance from colleagues in Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, but the chase did not last long because the motorist lost control of the vehicle which plunged over an embankment. He abandoned his vehicle and tried to escape into a nearby informal settlement.

"With the assistance of a Chippa Security guard who witnessed the incident, the man was arrested and taken to the Mfuleni Police Station where he was charged on several counts including reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence and evading arrest," Faro said.
