City calls for those planning Holiday Events to Apply Timeously

25 October 2009
"With the holiday season rapidly approaching, the events calendar for Cape Town is already quite full," says Councillor Taki Amira, Chairperson of the Good Hope Subcouncil.

While many events benefit residents and visitors alike and raise funds for worthy causes, they do have an impact on traffic flow, the availability of parking in public areas spaces and the deployment of the appropriate municipal staff.

The City of Cape Town would therefore like to remind any person, group, organisation or company that plans to hold any event within the metropolitan area of the existence of the City's Events Policy.

The Events Policy is not designed to discourage people who wish to organise events, but rather to ensure that they are safe for everyone involved.

The City accordingly calls on those planning events to avoid disappointment by applying early for the necessary authority to hold their event rather than at the last moment.

The City Events Policy may be accessed on the City website which provides the definition of an event and the application process to be followed.

The policy applies to all events on private and public land within the City's jurisdiction that impact on public resources. It covers aspects of event management such as the City's role in events, safety and environmental standards, legislative compliance, land use management requirements, communication protocols, the compilation of an operations manual and a calendar of events. It also provides a proactive, integrated approach to the provision of City services, with a single entry point for event applications and a consistent approvals procedure.
