Three Suspects Nabbed with the Help of Metro Police's 'Big Brother'

5 July 2010

Three suspects were arrested in central Cape Town this morning, 06 July, when they were caught in possession of stolen goods.

The suspects burgled a Telkom Direct shop, smashing a brick through the window to gain access to the premises. Operators at the City of Cape Town's CCTV control centre were able to monitor the suspects with the camera situated on the corner of Waterkant and Adderley Street. One suspect was spotted as he ran in the direction of Adderley Street with some of the stolen items, whilst the other two ran towards St George's Mall.

CCTV operators notified law enforcement agencies and Metro Police officers and security staff arrived on the scene within minutes and apprehended and searched the suspects.

The items that were confiscated include:

  • Three (3) laptops
  • Three (3) Sony Playstations
  • Two (2) Video Cassette Recorders (VCRs)

"This arrest shows that we are on the right track in our attempts to combat crime by using the latest technology. The CCTV control centre plays an integral part in our crime-fighting strategy. Criminals beware, 'Big Brother' is watching," said Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro.
