Metro Police Arrest Sixty-Three Suspects during Weekend Operations

City of Cape Town Metro Police officers partnered with the South African Police Services to hold various operations this weekend in Table view, Rondebosch, Hanover Park and Nyanga. These operations form part of their continued strategy to reduce the number of road accidents caused by drunk driving.

On Friday night, 03 December, officers arrested three (3) motorists in Rondebosch for driving under the influence of alcohol. The following evening, 04 December, officers arrested another ten (10) motorists at a roadblock on Potsdam road, Tableview; eight (8) motorists at a roadblock in Phillipi; and ten (10) motorists at a roadblock in Nyanga - all on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Friday morning, 03 December, the Metro Police Dog Unit arrested three suspects for possession of illegal narcotics following the execution of a search warrant at a house in Brindelhuis Street, Sir Lowry's Pass. The officers found and confiscated two hundred and twenty-four (224) packets of TIK, two hundred and six (206) half-tablets of Mandrax, two hundred and fifty-three (253) Mandrax tablets, eight (8) dagga stoppe and two thousand, one hundred and ninety rand (R2190) in cash. The drugs have an estimated street value of sixty-eight thousand rand (R68 000).

Metro Police officers arrested another three suspects on drug-related offences during operations in Claremont and Woodstock on Friday night. The officers found and confiscated four hundred grams (400g) of dagga, one packet of dagga and one unit of cocaine.

That same evening, officers arrested four (4) suspects in Kewtown and Kraaifontein for possession of dagga and Mandrax.

On Sunday afternoon, 05 December, officers arrested thirteen (13) motorists in Muizenberg and nine (9) in Gugulethu, all on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

"Our continued focus on drunk driving and the possession of illegal narcotics is paying off. Our officers will maintain high visibility patrols throughout the festive season and will also continue to conduct regular roadblocks and execute search warrants at suspected drug dens," said Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro.
