The eastern region of the City's Law Enforcement Department, held a clean-up operation in the Somerset West Central Business District (CBD) last week and issued fines to the value of just under twenty-five thousand rand (R25 000). The week-long operation focused on traders, vagrants and various illegal activities in the CBD of Somerset West.

The team's successes include the following:

  • one hundred and eight (108) fines issued for offences, including trading without a permit, trading in a prohibited area and parking in a loading zone
  • twenty (20) fines issued for illegal advertising. The illegal advertisements were also removed.
  • seventy-four (74) illegal traders' goods confiscated. Some of the goods confiscated include counterfeit sunglasses and cell phone chargers
  • forty (40) incidences of drinking in public
  • fifteen (15) incidences of possession of open alcohol in a public place

All the fines issued in the Somerset West CBD last week amounted to approximately twenty-four thousand rand (R24 500).

These operations will continue in the Somerset West area, but will also be extended to other areas across the city. "We are embarking on a zero tolerance approach toward illegal trading over this festive period", said Godfrey Crowster, Assistant Chief: Law Enforcement, East Region.
