On Sunday, 18 July, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and Minister of Community Safety Lennit Max will join Executive Mayor Dan Plato and a group of celebrity motorcyclists to revamp a community health centre in Khayelitsha in support of Mandela Day.
This event forms part of the Nelson Mandela Foundation's "Bikers for Mandela Day" initiative where an entourage of 20 motorcyclists set off from Johannesburg on July 13, en route to Cape Town. Along the way, they have been stopping over at various towns to work for at least 67 minutes on community projects in each region.
Their final stop is the SACLA centre in Khayelitsha where they will be joined by Premier Zille, Minister Max and Executive Mayor Plato in order to erect a security fence at the centre. The SACLA centre is a joint initiative by AIDS Response, a support organisation for community care workers, and SACLA, a community-based care organisation.
All media are welcome to attend this event. There will also be a media briefing at 13:00 in the One&Only Hotel Ballroom at the V&A Waterfront where the 20 motorcyclists will speak about their tour. They will be joined by Premier Zille, Minister Max and Executive Mayor Plato.
