City Finalises Line Up for Nelson Mandela: A Life Celebrated

10 December 2013

The City of Cape Town would like to sincerely thank all those who have collected their coupons for Cape Town’s own tribute to Madiba at the Cape Town Stadium – Nelson Mandela: A Life Celebrated.

All available coupons for the event on Wednesday 11 December 2013 have now been collected, which is a wonderful display of Madiba’s great impact on everyone’s lives.

The City would like to appeal to coupon-holders to please give away any coupons that they are not using. This is the best way of honouring Madiba: ensuring that as many people as possible can attend the event. Anyone who has spare coupons or coupons they cannot use is encouraged to give these coupons to friends, family members, or even strangers who they know will make use of them.

Line-up

The line-up for the event at the stadium has now been confirmed. Popular artists will perform their own tributes to Madiba including the legendary Johnny Clegg, Freshlyground and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Former Springbok rugby player Francois Pienaar; City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille; and Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, will all share their favourite memories and impressions of Madiba

Shado Twala will be the MC for the evening, which will also see performances by the Bala Brothers, Allou April, and Carla Diamond as well as various choirs.

The event starts at 16:00 and gates will open at 14:00.

In order to ensure a harmonious and smooth event, there will be some guidelines in place regarding what can be brought into the stadium.

Food and beverages are not allowed to be brought into the stadium. However, these items will be on sale at reduced rates inside the stadium. No alcohol is allowed inside the stadium and none will be on sale.

Coupon-holders should not bring any of the following items into the stadium: dangerous items; cameras with detachable lenses; umbrellas; strollers; helmets; and video cameras.

Coupon system

The City introduced a coupon system for entry into the stadium, for the safety of attendees. A maximum of five coupons were made available per person, free of charge, on presentation of a valid driver’s licence, Identity Document or Passport.

Without these coupons, members of the public will not be allowed access into the stadium. The City urges residents to only come to the stadium event if they have their coupon.

Public transport

The coupon for entry to the stadium event allows free access to public transport into and out of the city on the MyCiTi bus service, Golden Arrow Bus Services, and Metrorail.

There will be a free MyCiTi shuttle service from the Civic Centre to the Cape Town Stadium, and a pedestrian ‘walk of remembrance’ from the Cape Town Station to the Stadium will be activated (the fan walk).

Commuters are encouraged to use the free public transport service because roads around the stadium will be closed and it is anticipated that there will be traffic congestion.

Road closures

Various roads around the stadium will be temporarily closed and/or restricted to vehicular traffic. This will have an impact on traffic flow and motorists are asked to please plan their trips accordingly.

The route previously used for the fan walk will be opened as a ‘walk of remembrance’, which will also necessitate temporary road closures.
