Donated R300 000 Consumer Studies classroom launched by Minister Fritz

7 May 2018

The Western Cape Social Development MEC, Albert Fritz, launched the newly refurbished Consumer Studies classroom at Saxonsea Secondary School.

The facility boasts brand new appliances and refurbished class infrastructure to the value of R300 000, and was made possible by the generosity of the Grandwest CSI.

The classroom now boasts eight four-plate stoves, a fridge, a microwave, 15 workstations and some kitchen appliances.

Grandwest also oversaw the general refurbishment of the classroom, including painting, improved lighting, new cupboards, fixing kitchen sinks and taps, and repairing the damaged floors and ceilings.

We applaud any initiatives by the private sector to better the lives of young people, especially in areas which seek to build skills and promote education.

This newly upgraded classroom will help learners from Saxonsea, Atlantis, Mamre, Pella and Darling, which are all areas which experience social problems like poverty, unemployment, substance abuse and gangsterism, to gain skills which would make them almost immediately marketable to businesses in the hospitality industry.

We thank the Grandwest CSI for their hard work and generosity, and call on other private-sector firms to invest in young people.

As a Department, we have set aside R17.7-million this financial year for youth development. We will continue to expand opportunities for young people, including the expansion of the already 8 Youth Cafés across the province.
