5 year-old murder: DSD welcomes life sentence

19 October 2016

The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) welcomes the life sentence handed down to Bongani Dlamini in the Western Cape High Court today.

Dlamini had been found guilty of the brutal murder of 5 year-old girl, Anovuyo Ndamase, from Ekanini informal settlement.

The department hopes that this sentence will act as a deterrent, and send a strong message to society, that any harm against children will not be tolerated.

DSD would like to congratulate the South African Police Services and the National Prosecuting Authority, for having found the culprit and secured a conviction.

The timing of this sentencing is also significant, as it comes a few days after the department commemorated the UN International Day of the Girl Child.

The MEC of Social Development, Adv. Albert Fritz, continues to call on parents, especially of little girls, to be vigilant about their child’s safety. Guided by the Children’s Act of 2005, the department has a zero-tolerance approach to the neglect, abuse or harm brought onto any children.

The public can report any suspected incidents of neglect or abuse of children to the DSD hotline on 0800 220 250, or by approaching any of our DSD local offices closest to them.
