Ban of Ostrich Movement Lifted

The ostriches infected with the H5N2 Avian Influenza virus, as well as the high risk contact animals, in the Riversdale district have been culled during the last ten days. Subsequent to the culling all ostrich farms within ten kilometres of the infected property were tested for indications that the disease has spread. Based on the negative results obtained, Veterinary Services of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, after consultation with the National Department of Agriculture, has lifted the temporary ban that was placed on the movement of ostriches and other poultry in parts of the Mossel Bay and Riversdale magisterial districts.

The lifting of the temporary ban on the area between the N2 and Langeberg mountains in the south and north respectively and the R232 and R238 does not affect the status of ostriches in these districts in respect of export of ostrich meat. Therefore the temporary suspension of export of ostrich meat, as announced by the National Department of Agriculture remains in place.

The regular monitoring of ostrich farms for indication of the presence of Avian Influenza virus will continue. Where necessary, based on the monitoring test results, further investigations will be done and, if required, appropriate actions will be taken in respect of individual properties suspected of being infected.

The cooperation and assistance of all role players enabled the staff of Veterinary Services in the Western Cape to bring the outbreak of Avian Influenza rapidly under control. Special mention needs to be made of the valuable cooperation and assistance of the ostrich industry and farmers, the SA Police Service and Disaster Management of the Eden District Municipality.

As has been the case since the outbreak was first detected about four weeks ago the ostrich meat products that are offered for sale remains safe for human consumption.
