Minister Ivan Meyer to Take Part in Mandela Day 2014

17 July 2014

On Friday, 18 July 2014 (International Mandela Day), Minister of Finance, Dr Ivan Meyer and officials from the Provincial Treasury, will participate in the establishment of veggie gardens as part of their 67 minutes to honour and celebrate the life of Former President, Nelson Mandela.

Food security is one of the three major themes, with the other two being literacy and shelter, of Nelson Mandela International Day (Mandela Day) 2014.

Recent studies by Statistics South Africa has revealed that some 45% of the population lived below the poverty line and about one in ten households experienced “some form of hunger” every month.

Minister Meyer and Treasury officials are  therefore heeding the calls of organisations such as Lead SA to  South Africans to roll up their sleeves to help curb hunger and contribute towards food security by planting vegetable gardens in their homes and workplaces.

The veggie gardens will be established at the Baphumelele Children’s Home in Khayelisha which currently cares for approximately 100 children.

Donations of clothing, blankets, toys and books will also be handed over.

There will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.
