Minister Allen continues with District Engagements to ensure greater safety

28 September 2023

Minister Allen continues with District Engagements to ensure greater safety across the Province.

The month of September saw Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, continuing with intergovernmental municipal engagements (IGMEs) to ensure that greater collaboration is strengthened in the fight against crime across the province. This week, Minister Allen engaged the Central Karoo District Municipality (CKDM), and earlier this month, the West Coast District Municipality(WCDM). The engagements, where all local municipalities from the respective districts were represented, occurred in Beaufort West, CKDM and Vredendal, WCDM.

Amongst others, the aim of these engagements are to:

- Discuss the Western Cape Safety Plan (WCSP) and ensure a shared vision and focus,

- Unpack the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP),

- Understand the provincial safety budget,

- Engage with the crime statistics per district,

- Integrate, mobilise and utilise a wide range of knowledge, capacity and resources, and

- Align efforts that will lead to a safer Western Cape.

Minister Reagen Allen said: “I extend my appreciation to all municipalities in the Central Karoo and West Coast districts for the fruitful engagements. It is encouraging to note that public representatives and officials are all seeking to ensure that crime is addressed in their respective areas, as this will ensure that residents can live in safer communities. It is further welcoming that these districts have bought into the Western Cape Safety Plan (WCSP), seeking to ensure that it is successfully executed, so that the murder rate is halved by 2029.”

“I am looking forward to our next district engagement, which will happen in the Overberg region. We will always engage with the different spheres of government and relevant stakeholders, to ensure our residents live in dignity, without fear and where murders no longer happen in our communities. Our commitment as the Western Cape Government is to see that this becomes the safest province in the entire country.  The more we continue to work together, the more successes we will achieve in our fight against all forms of crime,” concluded Minister Reagen Allen.
