Alert to Maternity and Neonatal Units: Attempted Infant Abduction

6 October 2011

An incident occurred at Mowbray Maternity Hospital today on Friday, 7 October 2011, at 09:00, where a couple entered a facility with the pretence of being parents to a baby at the nursery.

The woman gave her name as Lutho or Luyanda Nzwane. She signed in the register stating that she was coming to feed her baby. The professional nurse on duty realised that they were not the parents of the baby and enquired further. The nurse then double checked to realise that no activity was shown of any admission or link to such a patient or baby on the Clinicom system.

Somerset Hospital was contacted and they stated that a similar incident had taken place earlier this morning at their facility. The nurse then informed security on the floor and the suspects hurried out and ran to the taxi rank. An alert clerk picked up a possible address for the male suspect in Gugulethu when doing the Clinicom search.

Police have been informed and this matter is regarded as a possible abduction attempt.
