Making sure that babies get the right kind of care, nutrition and stimulation is the best chance society has at breaking the cycle of poverty, violence, alcohol- and drug abuse.

The right nutrition during this 1 000-day window can have a profound impact on a child’s ability to develop and learn. Exclusive infant feeding is recommended for the first 6 months of life, there after you can introduce your baby to solid foods after he/she has turned 6 months.

For most new moms, it may seem difficult to find time for themselves with a new baby in the house. Only by taking care of yourself can you give your baby the best possible care.

Take a few minutes each day for caring for yourself. In doing so, you will be less easily frustrated, irritable, and self-critical, you may even protect yourself from postpartum depression.

Take care of yourself physically. Rest enough, eat right and healthy and exercise regularly.

  • Babies need only milk feeds for the first 6 months of life.
  • Milk continues to be an important source of nutrients to children after 6 months.
  • There is no need to put a time limit on feeds. Allow the baby to feed as often and as long as the baby wants.

The use of dummies, bottles and artificial teats are discouraged as they are difficult to clean and carry germs that can make your baby sick.
