World Homeless Day: Department to join NGO in ‘Give Responsibly’ donation drive

10 October 2017

To mark World Homeless Day, the Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) will join NGO partner Al-Imdaad in donating much-needed hygiene and sanitary packs to shelters for homeless people in Elsies River.

Today’s donation drive is part of our ongoing campaign to encourage people to ‘Give Responsibly’. Instead of giving money to street people, we encourage the public to rather donate to registered NGOs and shelters.

The highest numbers of homelessness are in the Cape Town Metro, with approximately just over 4800 people living and sleeping on the streets in the greater Cape Town area.

With a budget allocation of just over R15.4-million, DSD works closely with NGOs, national government agencies, and local government to provide services for homeless. Key to our services is the provision of shelters and specialist social work services aimed at reunifying homeless people with their families and communities.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews.
