Western Cape Nominees For SA Sports Awards Congratulated By Minister Marais

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais congratulates the Western Cape nominees for the 2015 South African Sports Awards. The South African Sports Awards recognise outstanding sporting achievements attained during 1 September 2014 – 30 September 2015.

The categories for which Western Cape sports stars are nominated are:

  • School Team of the Year: Oakdale Agricultural High School
  • Developing School Team of the Year: Iqhayiya Secondary School
  • Sportsman with a Disability: Ernst van Dyk
  • Sportswoman of the Year: Ilse Hayes and Peggy de Villiers
  • Volunteer of the Year: Zelda Hansen
  • Indigenous Games team of the Year: Western Cape Iintonga Team

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport encourages excellence and inclusivity in sport and culture through the effective, efficient and sustainable use of our resources, and through creative partnerships with others. In moving to excellence, we will create the conditions for access and mass participation, talent identification and skills development. With this mission we aim to work better together toward a socially inclusive, creative, active and connected Western Cape.

Minister Marais recognises and celebrates the sporting excellence of the sports stars hailing from the Western Cape.  Minister Marais said, “I congratulate the sports stars nominated for the prestigious national sports awards, we are immensely proud of them. I also want to thank them wholeheartedly for serving as beacons of hope to the youth of the Western Cape. Their excellence in sport and success in both national and international arenas allow the youth to aspire to the lifestyle they lead. Their perseverance and focus have groomed them into significant role models who the youth can look up to”.

Minister Marais also congratulates Wayde van Niekerk on his nomination as Sportsman of the Year and Jayde Andrew Julius for Newcomer of the Year. Both these athletes were born and bred in Western Cape but now reside in other provinces.

The South African Sports Awards ceremony will be held on 22 November 2015 in Bloemfontein.
