Western Cape Government to Support Public Viewing Areas for Madiba Funeral Broadcast

12 December 2013

The Western Cape Government is partnering with district municipalities to create Public Viewing Areas (PVAs) throughout the province where members of the public can watch the live televised coverage of former President Nelson Mandela’s funeral in Qunu this coming Sunday 15 December. These viewing areas are a crucial opportunity for Western Cape residents to participate in the momentous occasion as the week of national mourning draws to a close.

The Province has made funding available to municipalities that they will use to arrange the necessary infrastructure, equipment, transport and associated costs for the public screenings. The PVAs are expected to operate between 8am and 12pm. Further details will be communicated by district and local municipalities according to their own arrangements.

The Western Cape Government-supported Public Viewing Areas are:

  • Cape Winelands – Boland Park, Worcester
  • Central Karoo – KwaMandlenkosi, Beaufort West
  • Eden –  Rosemoore Stadium, George
  • Overberg – MegaPark, Bredasdorp
  • West Coast – Louwville Sports Grounds, Vredenburg

Members of the public are also advised that other institutions will be creating their own PVAs where the broadcast will be screened and they are encouraged to be alert for communication about other viewing sites.
