Western Cape dam levels

The latest average dam level for dams in the Western Cape is 76.62% (2020: 61.1%) while the latest average level for dams providing water to the City of Cape Town, is 97.5% (2020: 77.5%).

Anton Bredell, the minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape, says the winter rainfall has been above average and sees continued replenishment of water sources across the largest parts of the province.

“We urge people to use water responsibly and to assist local councils by reporting water leaks and blocked drains as swiftly as possible. We further urge communities not to use sewer systems for garbage disposal. Illegal dumping into sewers remains the cause of the majority of blockages/overflows in our largest communities including the City of Cape Town.”

Bredell says the City’s Water and Sanitation team clears and cleans over 300 sewer blockages and overflows per day across the entire metro area.

“Approximately 75% of these cases city-wide are the result of the misuse of the sewer system where objects such as rags, builders rubble, litter, fats and oils are dumped into manholes or enter via sinks or flushed down toilets. These items clog up sewer systems and can lead to spills.”

Voëlvlei dam – 86.4% full this week (2020: 73.2%. Last week: 83.9%)

Bergriver Dam 100% full this week (2020: 97.1%. Last week: 100%).

Theewaterskloof dam – 102% full this week (2020: 73.02%. Last week: 102.2%)

Clanwilliam Dam 99.8%. (2020: 71.5%. Last week: 99.9%)
