WC Athletes Off to National School Sport Champs

10 December 2013

Be committed to do your best, have discipline, play fair, enjoy yourself, and be graceful in defeat when you represent the Western Cape.” This was the inspirational message to school athletes who will compete at the upcoming National School Sports Championship in Bloemfontein from 10 to 15 December 2013.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and Western Cape Education Department (WCED) hosted a send-off ceremony in Kuils River on Monday, 9 December 2013. Thousands of learners from across the country in the age group 13–18 years will compete for honours in a variety of sporting codes, including indigenous games and disability sports. The championship is hosted annually by Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) and the Department of Basic Education (DBE).

A total of 904 athletes will represent the Western Cape in 12 sporting codes. The championship is an opportunity for gifted sportspersons to perform on the national stage and possibly be noticed by talent scouts.

Head of DCAS Mr Brent Walters encouraged athletes to perform to the best of their abilities. “This is an opportunity to excel, grow and reach for your dream. You represent the entire province. Go well and win out there.” Walters reminded them to personify the values of the Western Cape Government – caring, competence, accountability, integrity and responsiveness.

SRSA will offer bursaries and other support to talented athletes through the Sport Focus Schools Programme. Team work, trust and support from DCAS and WCED are crucial for our athletes to leave a mark in Bloemfontein. School sport development is building the national teams of tomorrow, better together.
