Walking Together Against Crime

1 November 2012

The Departments of Social Development and Cultural Affairs and Sport are in partnership to identify prevention and early intervention programmes for communities in the Cape Winelands to strengthen and build their capacity and self-reliance.

On Friday, 26 October 2012, hundreds of citizens from the Breede Valley community participated in a Fun Walk to create awareness regarding the crime problem in the area and the available resources. The event took place at the Zwelethemba Sport Field.

The participants were informed about the dangers of crime, how to make informed choices and utilise the available resources. The Department of Social Development also assessed youths from De Doorns, Touws River, Worcester, Rawsonville and Zwelethemba.

Ms Mari-Lize Peters of the Department said the study showed that housebreaking, theft, assault, assault to inflict bodily harm and possession of illegal drugs are occurring the most in the area. Many of these are gang-related. She thanked the Worcester SAPS and the Department of Correctional Services for contributing to the success of the event.
