Western Cape Department of Infrastructure completes Ravensmead CDC 3 months ahead of schedule
Media Release by Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers
Note to Editors: The Ravensmead CDC is not yet operational and cannot receive patients. The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness will communicate timelines in this regard in due course.
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DOI) is proud to announce that construction of the new R105 million Ravensmead Community Day Centre (CDC) is complete, delivered three months ahead of schedule.
The Department is committed to accelerated infrastructure delivery in support of service delivery excellence. Every new infrastructure project – whether it be housing, roads or clinics – is an investment in the people of the Western Cape.
Provincial Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers said, “This project stands as another powerful example of a government that prioritises good governance and service delivery. This partnership between government, community, industry partners, and professional teams is united by a common purpose - to deliver dignified, safe and accessible public infrastructure that benefits the residents of the Western Cape.”
“The Western Cape Government is investing in infrastructure right across the province. This CDC is one of many projects under way, including new roads and social housing. This is a province at work, for you,” added Minister Simmers.
With its community focused design, the project created 236 local job opportunities and injected R36.1 million into local business through targeted subcontractors, suppliers, manufacturers and local labour.
The new single storey facility features a safe, robust exterior, along with a series of light filled, welcoming inner courtyards. The layout is highly flexible, enabling consulting rooms to be assigned to different service areas as needs change - an essential requirement for adapting to evolving healthcare demands of the community.
The building will provide a full package of primary healthcare services, including acute care, women and child health, oral health, radiography, rehabilitation, chronic disease management, and a modern pharmacy.
The design team embedded passive climate responsive principles from the outset, rather than treating sustainability as an add on. The design maximises natural daylight to reduce energy consumption, positions consulting and counselling rooms for northern exposure to enhance thermal comfort, incorporates controlled and shaded window openings for effective heat management; utilises energy efficient LED lighting systems and rainwater harvesting to support the DOI’s drive toward implementing resource-efficient, future-proof, resilient public buildings.
The DOI extends its sincere appreciation to the main contractor for maintaining exceptional pace, quality, and compliance; to the Professional Service Providers, whose technical expertise, design innovation, and commitment ensured the project’s architectural and engineering excellence; and to the DOI Health Infrastructure team for their project management discipline, stakeholder coordination, and oversight, all of which have been integral to this accelerated delivery.
The official opening of the Ravensmead CDC to the public will be announced in due course by the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness.
Mireille Wenger, Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness, said, “Delivering care for the people of Ravensmead means getting every detail right. While the building is now complete, our teams are carefully equipping the facility so that when it opens, every person is welcomed into a space that puts their health and healing first, and supports care where and when they need it.”
