Unique Festival in Mossel Bay

5 October 2012

Plans to establish Mossel Bay as the high performance sporting capital of the Southern Cape received a major boost with the successful hosting of the inaugural Mossel Bay Sport Festival.

The festival was hosted by the Mossel Bay Municipality in conjunction with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, PetroSA, Mossel Bay Tourism as well as other sponsors. Altogether 27 different sporting tournaments were hosted by the individual sports federations to make this one of the biggest sporting events yet held in the region.

Mr Harry Hill of the Municipality confirmed that more than 2 000 sportsmen and women competed in venues across the town. The aim of the festival was to promote healthy lifestyles and to stimulate the local economy.

Executive Mayor Cllr Marie Ferreira said, like the Diaz Festival, admission to events was free to members of the public. She added that Mossel Bay is proud to be associated with major festivals of national and provincial importance. For example, the Point Cricket Festival, which is now in its 14th year, is the biggest school cricket festival in South Africa with 26 participating teams. Mossel Bay also has some of the best sailing waters in the country.

The Department believes that sport supports healthy lifestyles and builds bridges by bringing communities together. This could clearly be seen at the festival. The Municipality thanked Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, for his challenging spirit on the soccer pitch and his participation in the cycling event.
